Clio automations for solo and small law firms: five problems, five tested fixes

Law firm automation for solo attorneys and small firms on Clio Manage: intake replies to new inquiries, missed-call text-back, bill and retainer reminders, time capture and client status updates. Each recipe is an n8n workflow with setup steps, a monthly cost from the vendors' own price pages, and the result of our test run. No AI model makes decisions: every rule is written out, client emails and texts carry no case facts, and trust money never goes through Stripe.

Why these five

Prospects who can't reach you: intake and missed calls

US only for now: these recipes assume a US Clio account and US texting rules (A2P 10DLC), and none covers Clio's Canadian region or CASL yet. Practice figures come from Clio, a practice-management vendor; complaint figures come from state bars. These recipes are tools, not legal advice: check your state's rules on trust accounting, advertising and client communication.

How we test

Every workflow was imported into n8n 2.45.4 and run end to end on our test machine. Clio Manage (API v4), Clio Grow, the email sender (Resend), Outlook (Microsoft Graph), Twilio and Stripe were replaced by a local mock server built from their official API docs: it checks the same request shapes and required fields, enforces Clio's rate limit (HTTP 429) and records every call. These recipes use no AI model; every decision is a written rule you can read. Matters, clients and invoices are invented. Nothing was sent to a real phone, client or account. The billing recipe was also run once against a real Stripe test-mode sandbox (no money moves).

Software covered: Clio Manage (MyCase and PracticePanther not built yet). Prices checked October 2026.
